SUMMARY:Pathways of Peace: Food as Relationship—Winter Table Retreat at Prairiewoods (in person)
DESCRIPTION:As we enter into the colder months\, the earth retreats and rests to prepare for a new cycle. We\, too\, need this time of restoration. And while much of the land and its inhabitants slumber\, a few crops including resilient greens (e.g.\, kale\, spinach\, arugula) and root vegetables (e.g.\, turnips\, beets and parsnips) thrive in the cooler temperatures\, assuring a continued abundance of nourishing foods. \n\n\n\nGuided by mystics\, poets and saints\, let’s gather around the table and explore how these winter foods are grown\, ways in which our food choices can support a healthy outlook on winter\, and how eating foods grown locally provides an opportunity to foster peace at personal\, community and global levels. Come reflect on new ways of connecting with how food is grown and why this matters for personal and planetary health. \n\n\n\nAbout the facilitators\n\n\n\nThis overnight retreat at Prairiewoods (120 East Boyson Road in Hiawatha) will be facilitated by Christina Campbell and Ann Jackson\, PBVM. \n\n\n\nChristina Campbell\n\n\n\nAssociate Professor in Food Science and Nutrition at Iowa State University and Registered Dietitian Christina Campbell researches prenatal lifestyle choices on the health of mothers and children and the intersection of food and peace. She teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in medical nutrition therapy\, reducing consumer food waste\, the US food system and sustainable diets. \n\n\n\nAnn Jackson\n\n\n\nPrairiewoods Coordinator of Spiritual Services Ann Jackson\, PBVM\, blends eco-spirituality\, literature\, and leadership in service to individual spiritual direction and group facilitation. Ann delights in listening with others to the energy of Spirit stirring creativity\, passion\, discernment and service. \n\n\n\nRegistration\n\n\n\nThe cost of this overnight retreat is $175 and includes presentations\, Friday lodging\, and Saturday breakfast and lunch. SUMMARY:Silent Mindfulness Meditation Retreat at Prairiewoods (in person)
DESCRIPTION:As Jon Kabat-Zinn writes in Full Catastrophe Living\, “Life unfolds in moments. The healing power of mindfulness lies in living each one as fully as we can.” Mindfulness is the awareness that knows what is happening in the present moment as it is happening. It shapes a wise and compassionate relationship with and response to experience as it unfolds moment by moment. As Joseph Goldstein writes in A Heart Full of Peace\, “Mindfulness is the quality and power of mind that is deeply aware of what’s happening—without commentary and without interference … keeping us connected to brushing our teeth or having a cup of tea … connected to the people around us.” Scientific research shows that mindfulness can positively affect stress resilience\, physical and mental health\, the ability to sustain attention\, self-regulation of emotions\, interpersonal skills\, and general well-being and happiness. Join facilitator Chris Klug for a weekend retreat at Prairiewoods (120 East Boyson Road in Hiawatha) cultivating mindfulness in silence through sitting meditation\, walking meditation\, mindful movement and mindful eating with time for instructions\, questions and discussion. All are welcome to participate\, whether we are interested in beginning a formal mindfulness meditation practice or have been practicing for some time. The cost is $255 and includes sessions\, lodging and all meals. The commuter fee is $180 and includes sessions\, Saturday lunch and dinner\, and Sunday lunch. SUMMARY:The Power of Silence: October Silent Directed Retreat at Prairiewoods (in person)
DESCRIPTION:Perhaps you’ve participated for years in Prairiewoods’ Silent Directed Retreats. Or maybe you have seen these advertised and considered scheduling one for yourself\, but aren’t sure what a Silent Directed Retreat is. If you’ve participated in a Silent Directed Retreat\, we welcome you back. If you’ve never participated in a retreat like this\, we invite you to consider this question: What’s the deepest silence you’ve ever known? \n\n\n\nSilent Directed Retreats offer opportunities to enter into deep silence to sense what it feels like to awaken a quiet and palpable connection with the Source of All Being. Each day you will receive ongoing direction as you and a professionally-trained spiritual director intentionally listen to the movement of the Source of All Being in your heart. \n\n\n\n Silence assists you to get in touch with feelings\, thoughts and actions as you reflect\, meditate\, pray and rest. Silence deepens the capacity to discern\, notice\, sense the movement of the Source of All Being within the whole of your life. Sharing with a professional may bring you clarity\, deepen your commitment and accountability to the direction of your life\, and offer insight into that direction. \n\n\n\nAt Prairiewoods (120 East Boyson Road in Hiawatha)\, we try to hold any outside stimulation to a minimum so that everything—the silence\, solitude\, reflective activities\, meals\, etc.—supports your journey within. A daily centering practice is offered. Optional reflective activities such as artwork\, yoga and singing bowl meditation are available throughout the week. Even meals are eaten reflectively in silence. Each day supports your individual needs. Stroll woods and prairie. Sense sunset quietly turn to dusk. Journal or read\, if you choose. Nap. Engage in yoga\, art expression\, meditation. Notice how food nourishes your capacity for silence. Explore holding the silence with creation all around you: humans\, stone\, tree\, pond\, squirrel\, deer\, turkey\, star\, moon\, dawn\, dusk … Is the silence simply the absence of noise? Or is it also a presence unto itself? See for yourself! \n\n\n\nCome re-establish and remember the deep connection we share with all of Creation as we listen together to the GREAT SILENCE. Take time to rest in silence\, to sense its wisdom\, to know its fullness as it offers you life. \n\n\n\nAuthor Carolyn Myss assures: “The soul always knows what to do to heal itself. The challenge is to silence the mind." This retreat will be facilitated by Cindy Dunn; Eric Evans; Ann Jackson\, PBVM; Leslie Schwarting; and Lucille Winnike\, FSPA. The cost is $525 and includes lodging\, meals and spiritual direction. Partial scholarships are available. \n\n\n\nRegistration\n\n\n\nFor more information or to register\, contact Prairiewoods at www.Prairiewoods.org or 319-395-6700.

SUMMARY:Francis\, Clare & Bonaventure: Repairing Person & Planet
DESCRIPTION:Our world and ourselves are in need of great healing. What we are doing is not working. We need a new way of looking at things\, a new paradigm. This “new” paradigm might very well be an old one grounded in the ancient mystical wisdom of Franciscan Spirituality – the spirituality found in Francis of Assisi\, Claire\, and Bonaventure. A spirituality where the personal journey is joined to personal commitment toward healing ourselves\, our homes\, the world and the cosmos through loyalty\, stewardship\, and love. Come learn what it means to be entangled with the world’s well-being! \n\n\n\nRegistration\n\n\n\n\nhttps://www.oldenburgfranciscancenter.org/programs.html \n\n\n\n(812)933-6437 \n\n\n\ncenter @oldenburgosf.com

SUMMARY:Ecological Spirituality: New Horizons for the 21st Century Retreat at Prairiewoods (hybrid)
DESCRIPTION:9 am. – 1 p.m. each day. Come spend the mornings with us as we welcome Diarmuid O’Murchu online from Ireland. Spend the afternoon and evenings in reflection at Prairiewoods or in your own home. \n\n\n\nMost of us are not aware of the fact that we live within the context of a world-view (a way of being in the world and understanding it). Thanks to new scientific insights of the 20th century\, our sense of the world has expanded enormously. \n\n\n\nFor over 50 years now\, we have been inspired by geologian Thomas Berry and others on the pioneering work of the New Universe Story. How to ground that vision—ecologically and spiritually—remains a formidable challenge\, the aspects of which will be explored in this retreat/workshop. \n\n\n\nCome spend the mornings with us as we welcome Diarmuid O’Murchu online from Ireland. Spend the afternoon and evenings in reflection at Prairiewoods or in your own home. \n\n\n\nAbout Diarmuid O’Murchu\n\n\n\nDiarmuid O’Murchu\, a member of the Sacred Heart Missionary Order and a graduate of Trinity College in Dublin\, Ireland\, is a social psychologist whose early working life had been in social ministry\, predominantly in London. A long-time friend of Prairiewoods\, in his more recent years\, he has worked as a workshop leader and group facilitator\, conducting programs on Adult Faith Development across several countries. He is a widely read author\, whose many books have long resided on the shelves and in the hands of Prairiewoods guests. Now as a retired missionary\, he lives in Dublin. For more information\, visit www.diarmuidomurchu.com or read his latest book\, Ecological Spirituality. \n\n\n\nRegistration\n\n\n\nThe author will attend via Zoom\, and participants are invited to join in person or via Zoom. \n\n\n\n\nThe in-person cost is $230 and includes Wednesday and Thursday lodging and Wednesday lunch through Friday lunch. \n\n\n\nThe commuter fee is $150 and includes three morning presentations and daily lunch. \n\n\n\nThe online only fee is $100 and includes three morning presentations.\n\n\n\n\nFor more information or to register\, contact Prairiewoods at www.Prairiewoods.org or 319-395-6700.

SUMMARY:Food\, Inc. 2
DESCRIPTION:Register today to join the Sisters and other Franciscans For Earth on Tuesday\, September 10\, 2024\, at 6:30 pm Central via Zoom\, for a free screening of the film “Food\, Inc. 2.”As the name suggests\, Magnolia Pictures’ Food\, Inc. 2\, is the 2024 sequel to the 2008 Oscar®-nominated film (and one of our former FFE Eco-Series documentaries) Food\, Inc. According to www.rocofilms.com\, the original groundbreaking documentary ignited a conversation about the multinational corporations that control food systems at enormous cost to our planet\, workforce\, and health. Food\, Inc. 2 comes “back for seconds” to reveal how corporate consolidation has gone unchecked by our government. An efficient\, yet shockingly vulnerable food system now exists\, dedicated only to increasing profits. This consolidated power leads to exploited laborers\, a degraded environment\, less healthy food\, and a dysfunctionaly supply chain.According to the film’s participant site\, a handfull of companies control almost every category of food and exert their power over our government\, the workforce and the consumer:• 85% of beef processing is controlled by 4 companies• 83% of cold cereal industry is dominated by 3 companies• 70% of the carbonated soft drink market is controlled by 2 companies• 80% of the baby formula market is controlled by 2 companiesSeeking solutions\, the film introduces innovative farmers\, food producers\, workers’ rights activists\, and prominent legislators such as U.S. Senators Cory Booker and Jon Tester\, who are facing these companies head-on and fighting to create a more sustainable future. \n\n\n\nRegister: www.fsolph.org/events/

SUMMARY:Coffee Talks — Embracing Compassion: A Journey into the Heart of Humanity
DESCRIPTION:Monthly coffee talks at Oldenburg Franciscan Center. \n\n\n\nWith Fr. Ed Kinerk\, SJ\, Spiritual Director \n\n\n\nJoin us on a transformative exploration into the essence of humanity through the lens of compassion. Compassion means to suffer with someone\, not necessarily literally but by being present and sympathetic. God showed his love for us by becoming one of us and literally sharing our sufferings and even death. We show our compassion by being aware of the sufferings of those we love and being present to them as much as is possible.
