DESCRIPTION:Please join the Franciscan Sisters and Chris Wimmer of Known & Grown STL on Tuesday\, October 11\, 2022 at 6:30 pm (Central time) live at Tau Center in Kirkwood\, MO or via Zoom for the Franciscans For Earth Eco-Series speaker presentation entitled “Farm. Food. Environment. Social Impact!”Chris Wimmer joined the Missouri Coalition for the Environment’s Food & Farm team as the Known & Grown Farm Specialist in July of 2019. Chris was born and raised in St. Louis\, MO\, and always dreamed of becoming a farmer. He received his BS in Agronomy from University of Missouri Columbia. Eager to combine his passion for environmental stewardship and growing food Chris founded The Farm at Kraut Run in 1995. The farm produced organic vegetables and meat sold locally through a Community Supported Agriculture program\, farmers markets\, and local restaurants. The farm’s hands-on educational field trips were designed to impress on visitors the importance of enhancing nature while producing food responsibly. In 2017 MCE sponsored a trip to the farm that introduced Chris to the effective environmental work they have been doing for the last 50 years. He is excited to join the newly formed Known and Grown Team\, and to share his desire to expand the availability of locally grown\, organic and humanely raised food. \n\n\n\nKnown & Grown STL works to build a resilient food community by supporting and spreading awareness about humane and chemical-free farmers within 150 miles of St. Louis. SUMMARY:Writing from Nature Retreat: Practices in Ecopoetics & Slow Seeing
DESCRIPTION:What happens when we spiritually connect with our natural environment? How do we record these experiences in words? How do we communicate those moments to others through poetry? What do we come to learn about ourselves through realizing our place in the natural world? \n\n\n\nThis weekend retreat at Prairiewoods (120 East Boyson Road in Hiawatha) will be facilitated by David Duer and Cecile Goding. It  will include three components: learning (looking at forms\, techniques\, other poets)\, practicing (writing from prompts and from our direct engagement with the woods and prairie) and responding (sharing and discussing our work with others). The over-arching goal is\, as Thoreau says\, to return to our senses. Or to take ourselves to a place where\, as Annie Dillard writes in Pilgrim at Tinker Creek\, we are “gazing beyond … into the realm of the real where subjects and objects act and rest purely.”  \n\n\n\nThe cost of this weekend retreat is $230 and includes sessions\, lodging and all meals. The commuter fee is $180 and includes sessions and all meals. A non-refundable deposit of $25 is required at registration. (Full payment is required to register online. SUMMARY:Confronting Environmental Racism
DESCRIPTION:Franciscan Action Network and the Franciscan Federation are pleased to present a 4-part webinar series on Confronting Environmental Racism.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFrom plastics to cosmetics\, fashion\, fertilizer\, and more\, petrochemicals are everywhere in our daily lives\, seeping into our air\, water\, soil\, food\, and bloodstreams. As the transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy proceeds\, many corporations are trying to ramp up petrochemical and plastic production to stay in business. While all Americans are affected\, some communities are affected much more than others. As Franciscans\, we are called to stand with our sisters and brothers who have been most directly affected. \n\n\n\nThe oil\, gas and petrochemical industry have long placed their facilities in areas inhabited by Black\, Brown\, Indigenous\, or poor communities deemed “sacrifice zones.” It’s time for us to stand with communities on the frontlines of this environmental racism. \n\n\n\nThe centerpiece of our series will be three short documentaries\, “Big Oil’s Last Lifeline\,” produced by Hip Hop Caucus. At three of our four gatherings\, we will view one 20-minute long documentary and hear from a speaker in one of the “sacrifice zones” in the U.S.–Houston\, Louisiana\, and West Virginia–while at the fourth we will discuss advocacy options with experienced activists. \n\n\n\nTogether\, we will learn how the petrochemical industry violates laws and regulations with impunity\, leading to the unconscionable – dumping cancer-causing pollution into the air\, water\, and soil – and what can be done to address this situation. \n\n\n\nNOTE: There are four sessions. Each session will be one-hour beginning at 4 pm Eastern / 1 pm Pacific. Attend one or more if you wish. The fourth session will be a discussion with climate activists. \n\n\n\n\nRegister

SUMMARY:Women's Mindfulness & Yoga Retreat at Prairiewoods
DESCRIPTION:Yoga is a healing modality for self-realization\, showing how we can progress along life’s journey by opening to our Divine Nature. Mindfulness calls on us to literally stop and wake up to exactly how things actually are right now\, with self-kindness\, which can be deeply healing and transformative. Come to Prairiewoods (120 East Boyson Road in Hiawatha) in the spirit of interconnectedness and receptivity to create a deliberate pause for self-reflection.  \n\n\n\nFacilitator Allison Peet will guide us to explore gentle hatha yoga\, yoga nidra\, various mindfulness meditations\, mandala drawing\, breath-focused practice\, loving kindness and self-compassion practice.  \n\n\n\nThere will be periods of silence offered\, as well as time for reflection and inquiry. All scheduled activities are optional and plenty of time and space will be offered for personal rest on your own to return home refreshed\, connected and renewed. Some experience with gentle yoga and meditation is preferred. \n\n\n\nAbout Allison Peet\n\n\n\nAllison Peet is a certified Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) Instructor trained at UMass Center for Mindfulness\, founded by Jon Kabat-Zinn\, Ph.D.\, and the Mindfulness Center at Brown University. She is a certified Buteyko Breathing Method coach and registered yoga instructor (RYT200). She’s taught since 2015 and hundreds have graduated from her MBSR program. Based on a pre and post self-evaluation\, 84% of grads lowered their perceived stress and reduced stress levels an average of 35%. Allison attends week-long or more silent meditation retreats and has a regular practice. The cultivation of mindfulness transformed her relationship with stress and anxiety\, which inspired her to start her own business\, From Within Wellness\, to benefit others.  \n\n\n\nRegistration\n\n\n\nThe cost of this weekend retreat is $230 and includes sessions\, lodging and all meals.
