SUMMARY:Nourish Your Soul: A Retreat for Caregivers & Those Working in Healthcare at Prairiewoods
DESCRIPTION:While healthcare systems\, structures and technologies are evolving frantically\, the people delivering care in hospitals\, clinics\, nursing homes and other settings remain the bedrock of healthcare. Many of these caregivers are depleted and running on empty. There is no more to give. During this overnight retreat at Prairiewoods (120 East Boyson Road in Hiawatha)\, Leslie Schwarting will guide us to honor the journey of caregiving and explore spiritual and psychological practices for caregivers to find restoration. Research reflects that three core domains can restore and support individuals when integrated. In this retreat\, we will explore these domains from a spiritual perspective: Coping and Control\, Sense of Purpose and Human Connection. Join other caregivers for a retreat to nourish your soul. The cost of this overnight retreat is $200 and includes sessions\, Friday night lodging\, and Saturday breakfast and lunch. The commuter fee is $150 and includes sessions and Saturday lunch. For more information or to register\, contact Prairiewoods at www.Prairiewoods.org or 319-395-6700. \n\n\n\n\nRegister

SUMMARY:My Octopus Teacher
DESCRIPTION:The Academy-award winning film My Octopus Teacher to be featured May 9 via ZoomThe winner of Best Documentary Feature at 2021’s Academy Awards “My Octopus Teacher\,” will be May’s free FFE Eco-Series event. A special viewing and discussion of the film will take place on Tuesday\, May 9\, 2023\, at 6:30 in the evening Central\, online via Zoom. This film was the feel-good choice as it portrayed the filmmaker forging an unusual friendship with an octopus living in a South African kelp forest. We learn along with him as a young octopus displays remarkable curiosity and shares the mysteries of her world. Visiting her den and tracking her movements for months on end\, he eventually wins the animal’s trust and they develop this never before seen bond between human and wild animal. Reflecting on her lessons changes his life for the better. Join us for this true story of Craig Foster and his underwater friend\, directed by Pippa Erlich and James Reed.Franciscans For Earth is sponsored by the Franciscan Sisters of Our Lady of Perpetual Help. SUMMARY:Spirituality in the 21st Century: Weaving a New Story of Meaning with Prairiewoods
DESCRIPTION:Please welcome esteemed author and facilitator Jeremy Lent! Jeremy is the author of The Patterning Instinct\, A Cultural History of Humanity’s Search for Meaning and The Web of Meaning\, Integrating Science and Traditional Wisdom to Find Our Place in the Universe (www.jeremylent.com). It is a delight and a great gift for Prairiewoods that he will be joining us LIVE and in person\, along with our favorite musician-of-Earth\, Sara Thomsen (www.sarathomsen.com). Jeremy is well known for his eclectic approach to the integration of science and holistic spirituality\, and he is also quite adept at presenting embodied spiritual wisdom streams across many traditions. His arc of presentation for the weekend will be a brief introduction on Friday evening on how we construct our worldviews. On Saturday morning\, he will explore with us the implications of a worldview of deep interconnectedness\, followed by embodied practices based on Liology (https://www.jeremylent.com/liology.html)\, an integrated\, embodied framework for well-being and spiritual groundedness. On Saturday afternoon\, he will introduce us to the inspiring vision of\, and pathways to\, a life-affirming “Ecological Civilization.” Sara’s soulful music will be woven throughout\, moving us all into sacred\, shared “We” space\, where our imagination and dreams will meet the world’s great needs. We are the ones we’ve been anticipating! Please join us for what promises to be an inspiring\, soul-transforming event! This Friday evening and Saturday event is being hosted at Grant Wood Area Education Agency (4401 Sixth Street SW in Cedar Rapids\, Iowa—please note this is a new location)\, and online via Zoom. Costs begin at $90. For more information or to register\, contact Prairiewoods at www.Prairiewoods.org or 319-395-6700. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegistration Information

SUMMARY:The Letter
DESCRIPTION:The documentary on the encyclical\, Laudato Si’ by Pope Francis entitled The Letter\, will be April’s free Franciscan for Earth Eco-Series event. A special viewing and discussion of the film will take place on Tuesday\, April 11\, 2023\, at 6:30 in the evening Central\, via Zoom. In October\, YouTube Originals released this grand documentary telling the story of the encyclical letter and the unfolding ecological emergency. It’s the fruit of a few years of work of Laudato Si’ Movement in partnership with Off the Fence (Oscar-winning producers of My Octopus Teacher) and the Vatican. Pope Francis is the film’s star\, and he generously spent time during the production\, sharing his deep wisdom. Other voices are also featured\, representing the peripheries of the ecological crisis: a teenage youth activist from India\, an indigenous leader from the Amazon\, a climate refugee from Senegal\, and scientists from Hawaii. Be touched by the prophetic stories of Ridhima\, Chief Dada\, Arouna\, and Robin and Greg—all real-life heroes in and outside the film. Their in-person dialogue with the Pope was priceless. As the film powerfully explains\, “the cry of the earth and the cry of the poor are growing increasingly desperate. Droughts\, floods\, wildfires\, hurricanes\, deforestation—they all keep getting worse and worse.” \n\n\n\n\nRegister

SUMMARY:Rooted Emergence: Spiritual Operating Systems 2.0 Retreat at Prairiewoods
DESCRIPTION:We are aware of life emerging\, changing\, and regenerating all around and within us. Our understanding of who “We” are is shifting. Humanity is on the cusp of a new ontology (nature of being) and a spiritual renaissance. Biologically\, we are merged more and more with technology\, truly becoming cybernetic organisms—”cyborgs.” Some are quite comfortable with the merger\, especially those called “digital natives.” What if we were born prior to digital immersion\, struggling to connect with those whose lives flourish in the tech milieu? How do we understand our deeper\, interior selves\, and our evolving relationships? What does spirituality look like in this context? A new “spiritual operating system 2.0” may be required. We are collectively and gradually marking a transition to a “spiritual\, but not religious” world. Our pandemic-era religious gatherings have morphed into pixelated squares on a screen\, our rituals appearing as two-dimensional images without taste\, smell or texture. We are learning to adapt and make meaning in this new context. Maybe our daily meditations come from an email alert. Maybe our rituals are focused on breath and embodied energy\, and our prayer is in rhythm with the changing seasons. Expediency in communication—the text—has supplanted most other forms for daily interaction. Can emojis communicate the depths of loss or the vibrancy of life? How does symbol and metaphor in our relanguaging process help us co-create emerging spiritual meaning? And what about our moral compass in this “post-human” era? What if terms like “the common good” escape us\, but the topic of AI (artificial intelligence) rights enters our ethical consideration? Join facilitators Ellen Bruckner and Laura A. Weber\, Ph.D.\, at Prairiewoods (120 East Boyson Road in Hiawatha) in going deeper into the mystery of rooted emergence\, our journey of interior awareness in today’s complex world. The either-or structure of binary programming may leave us feeling a deep void\, and exhausted from being always “on.” We may feel like we are drowning in a sea of zeros and ones\, without the grayscale\, the nuance of richly varied life experience. It can be felt as an overload to our neurological\, emotional and spiritual selves. How might we remain rooted\, while our spiritual taproots and mycelial networking systems move through the life cycle of composting and regenerating\, garnering nourishment from many new sources? On this weekend odyssey\, we will take a first fierce step. Ready to make the leap? This is “one small step” for each of us\, and “one giant leap” for all of us\, the wider “We.” The cost of this weekend retreat is $230 and includes sessions\, lodging and all meals. The commuter fee is $180 and includes sessions\, Saturday lunch and dinner\, and Sunday lunch. \n\n\n\n\nRegister

SUMMARY:Wild Soul\, Wider We Retreat: Reweaving Our Stories of Belonging at Prairiewoods
DESCRIPTION:The wildness of creation forever unfolds—and tells—its story. Wildness is also within us as members of the wider “We”—the web of existence that binds us to the squirrel in our backyard\, the bluestem of our prairies\, the flowing waters of our streams\, the towering trees of our forests\, the generativity of our soil’s microorganisms\, and the flaring forth of stars and galaxies. But are we hearing the stories of wildness? Are we understanding our part in the great conversation? In this time of nature’s distress\, creation is speaking. How are we listening? This weekend retreat will be led by Thomas Dean at Prairiewoods (120 East Boyson Road in Hiawatha). Through stories\, poetry\, music and art—others’ and our own—we are invited to answer creation’s alluring call\, to listen closely to the languages of our creature kin and arbor elders\, to sense deeply the harmony of our interbeing\, and to respond with our unique expression and spirit. Winter’s darkness and the new year are times for rekindling our stories\, our commitments\, our vocations and avocations\, our spirituality—all of our relationships with the web of creation. Join us for a weekend of contemplation\, creativity\, dreaming and sharing as we reweave our individual and collective wild souls into nature’s story and the unfolding universe’s song. Thomas Dean is a writer and teacher from Iowa City. He is senior presidential writer/editor at the University of Iowa\, where he also teaches interdisciplinary and writing courses. He has given numerous presentations and conducted workshops and retreats on writing\, our relationships with the natural world and the inner teacher. His books include Under a Midland Sky and Tallgrass Conversations: In Search of the Prairie Spirit (co-authored with Cindy Crosby)\, both from Ice Cube Press. He is currently in the process of becoming a Circle of Trust facilitator with the Center for Courage and Renewal. The cost of this weekend retreat is $230 and includes sessions\, lodging and all meals. SUMMARY:Confronting Environmental Racism
DESCRIPTION:Franciscan Action Network and the Franciscan Federation are pleased to present a 4-part webinar series on Confronting Environmental Racism.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFrom plastics to cosmetics\, fashion\, fertilizer\, and more\, petrochemicals are everywhere in our daily lives\, seeping into our air\, water\, soil\, food\, and bloodstreams. As the transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy proceeds\, many corporations are trying to ramp up petrochemical and plastic production to stay in business. While all Americans are affected\, some communities are affected much more than others. As Franciscans\, we are called to stand with our sisters and brothers who have been most directly affected. \n\n\n\nThe oil\, gas and petrochemical industry have long placed their facilities in areas inhabited by Black\, Brown\, Indigenous\, or poor communities deemed “sacrifice zones.” It’s time for us to stand with communities on the frontlines of this environmental racism. \n\n\n\nThe centerpiece of our series will be three short documentaries\, “Big Oil’s Last Lifeline\,” produced by Hip Hop Caucus. At three of our four gatherings\, we will view one 20-minute long documentary and hear from a speaker in one of the “sacrifice zones” in the U.S.–Houston\, Louisiana\, and West Virginia–while at the fourth we will discuss advocacy options with experienced activists. \n\n\n\nTogether\, we will learn how the petrochemical industry violates laws and regulations with impunity\, leading to the unconscionable – dumping cancer-causing pollution into the air\, water\, and soil – and what can be done to address this situation. \n\n\n\nNOTE: There are four sessions. Each session will be one-hour beginning at 4 pm Eastern / 1 pm Pacific. Attend one or more if you wish. The fourth session will be a discussion with climate activists. \n\n\n\n\nRegister

SUMMARY:Silent Mindfulness Meditation Retreat at Prairiewoods
DESCRIPTION:As Jon Kabat-Zinn writes in Full Catastrophe Living\, “Life unfolds in moments. The healing power of mindfulness lies in living each one as fully as we can.” Mindfulness is the attention to what is happening in the present moment as it is happening. It shapes a wise and compassionate relationship with and response to experience as it unfolds moment by moment. As Joseph Goldstein writes in A Heart Full of Peace\, “Mindfulness is the quality and power of mind that is deeply aware of what’s happening—without commentary and without interference … keeping us connected to brushing our teeth or having a cup of tea … connected to the people around us.” Scientific research shows that mindfulness can positively affect stress resilience\, physical and mental health\, the ability to sustain attention\, self-regulation of emotions\, interpersonal skills\, and general well-being and happiness. Join facilitator Chris Klug for a weekend retreat at Prairiewoods (120 East Boyson Road in Hiawatha) to cultivate mindfulness in silence amid instruction\, questioning\, sitting meditation\, walking meditation\, mindful movement and mindful eating. All are welcome to participate\, whether we are interested in beginning a formal mindfulness meditation practice or have been practicing for some time. The cost is $230 and includes sessions\, lodging and all meals. The commuter fee is $180 and includes sessions\, Saturday lunch and dinner\, and Sunday lunch. For more information or to register\, contact Prairiewoods at www.Prairiewoods.org or 319-395-6700. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister
