Franciscan Federation Launches New Community Membership Model

by Julianne Wallace

The Franciscan Federation is excited to announce the launch of our new Community Membership model, designed to foster connection, collaboration, and shared Franciscan values across all recognized Franciscan communities. This model will launch on January 1, 2026.

About Community Membership
Community Membership is now open to recognized Franciscan communities—including congregations, fraternities, provinces, government units, lay communities, and more. This inclusive new membership structure ensures that when a community joins the Federation, every individual within that community enjoys the full spectrum of Federation benefits.

Three Pathways for Communities to Join
The Franciscan Federation recognizes the diversity and vitality of our movement. Our Community Membership accommodates:

  • Founding TOR Communities (Formerly the Canonical Community Membership): Including vowed religious, affiliates/associates, and employees of TOR communities.
  • Franciscan Orders (Brand New!): Welcoming 1st Order members, Poor Clares, and Secular communities.
  • Lay Communities (Formerly Associate Membership): For lay intentional groups and associate organizations not included with sponsoring congregations.

Flexible, Fair Membership Fees

  • All communities will now pay the same membership rate.
  • Membership fees are based on the size of your community as of December 31 of the previous year, making our new model both accessible and equitable. There are five tiered membership levels

With this new community membership model, the Franciscan Federation is building an even stronger network of Franciscan leaders, learners, and companions. While we deeply honor and remain rooted in our canonical communities and their enduring legacy, we are also joyfully expanding our tent to include all expressions of Franciscan life. We invite all communities to register and become part of our shared mission.

At this time, only the community membership dues structure is changing. We anticipate making updates to individual membership and dues, with a revised model expected to launch in the Spring of 2026.

Together, in the spirit of Francis and Clare, we journey forward—stronger as one Federation family.
