RE : SANCTUARY HOUSE for YOUNG SUICIDAL PEOPLE
Dear Father Frank Scornaienchi, and Franciscan TORs (Secular Franciscan Sisters and Brothers)
I saw your advertised call (link below) for Franciscan TORs (Seculars) in the Southern US, and I decided to write to you immediately. I am a Franciscan by heart (does this count?).
If you are able to gather at least 2 secular Franciscan sisters and 2 secular Franciscan brothers of Christ, who are based in the South, please read my mission proposal below.
https://franfed.org/2024/03/19/seeking-tor-sisters-or-friars-in-the-south/
I am a retired physician, and I am planning to open our old house in Georgia for charitable use—specifically, as a brief SANCTUARY HOUSE for YOUNG SUICIDAL PEOPLE, i.e., those below age 26. First, we will ensure that they are appropriately linked to psychiatric and/or psychologist care. Afterwards they can stay with us for 3 to 5 days, so we can perform supportive intervention and spiritual encouragement. I AM RECRUITING VOLUNTEER NUNS, PRIESTS, PSYCHIATRISTS, NURSES and SOCIAL WORKERS to help in this mission of saving hopeless young people.
My operational plan : One sister and one priest from their congregations shall stay (live in) for one month in the Mission House. After one month, a new sister and priest from other congregations shall arrive to replace them. We will use current MEDICAL standards– evidence-based Psychiatry protocols like Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Psychotherapy (Talk Counseling), Group therapy (Family or Peer (recovered suicidals) — BUT add SPIRITUAL introspection to the regimen.
When a suicidal person contacts us, we will immediately link him/her to psychiatric care at their nearest hospital location (they would visit their hometown ER). If the patient is not admitted by their hospital, we can allow him/her to stay with us for 3 to 5 days (but not longer than this) to have psychotherapy engagement and spiritual support. If they had been admitted to the hospital, they can stay with us after discharge. ALSO : if the cause of their suicidal ideations can be addressed by us in some way, we will help them resolve that too.
My vision is to make the whole endeavor resemble an ONGOING MEDICAL MISSION for YOUNG SUICIDAL patients. I am compiling a list of professed nuns/priests, psychiatrists, nurses, doctors, social workers who would like to help in this mission by giving some of their time with us for free. Would you want to help in this?
Sincerely
Irma Rodriguez, MD
